The Goals of the Huruma Centre and Friends of Huruma
Total Friends of Huruma Funding Goal for 2021: $52,000 US
Total Friends of Huruma Funding Goal for 2021: $52,000 US
Through careful conversation and respectful relationships, the leadership of the Huruma Centre and the Friends of Huruma have arrived at five goals. These goals guide our work together.
Goal One: Operating Income - funding goal for 2021: $22,000 US The Huruma Centre total operating budget is about $44,000 US - a large amount of money in an economy that is largely agrarian and in a country where the Coronavirus has stopped virtually all tourism. The Friends of Huruma is currently committed to providing about $22,000 per year in operating support. Our partners in Berlin, Germany recently renewed their commitment to support the Centre. They provide $13,000 per year in operational support. The Iringa Diocese provides funding as well, supporting the cost of compensating the Director and Chaplain at the Huruma Centre, providing another $2,000 in operating support. |
The Huruma Centre is responsible for locating remaining funding for its annual operating costs - equivalent to about $7,000. Some comes from other local mission organizations in Iringa and, previously, some was received from visitors to the Centre, but as the pandemic continues, income from visitors has stopped. Friends of Huruma coordinator Pastor Chris Smith and the leaders of the Iringa Diocese also encourage the congregations of the Iringa Diocese to support the mission of the Huruma Centre. In recent years, more than 30 congregations of the diocese have provided in-kind gifts of grain as well as gifts of sheep, goats, and chickens. These gifts are gladly received by the Centre to feed the children. Any surplus is sold to provide funding for the budget. |
Goal Two: Scholarships - funding goal for 2021: $18,000
Education Changes Everything. Before children come to the Centre, their futures are bleak, with little to look forward to. The Huruma Centre is more than just a place of basic needs; the Centre provides hope. In a place of safety and love, the children begin to live for more than tomorrow; they begin to aspire to make a life of value and worth. Friends of Huruma is committed to providing scholarship support so that every child at the Centre receives the education he or she needs to thrive and find a path to a good future. Gifts support secondary school scholarships, vocational training, and post-secondary diploma and degree programs. |
Funding scholarships for secondary boarding school is a shared enterprise among Friends of Huruma and its partners. Of the total amount needed to fund a year of a student's boarding school education, the Iringa Diocese provides 30% of the cost through tuition reductions, partners in Berlin, Germany provide 15%, and Friends of Huruma provides 55%. In addition, Friends of Huruma funds 100% of scholarships for vocational training and post-secondary specialized programs and university education for students from the Huruma Centre. Through these efforts, Friends of Huruma currently sponsors 24 students in secondary boarding schools of the Iringa Diocese, three students in vocational training, and one student who will complete his post-secondary training to become a nurse this fall. |
Goal Three: Essential Health Care - funding goal for 2021: $2,000 US
Essential health care includes occasional basic physical examinations, eye exams, and providing for the everyday health care needs of the children and staff of the Huruma Centre. Friends of Huruma funds the periodic purchase of supplies for the small dispensary at the Centre, which is under the care of Matron Rahabu, who is also a nurse. Each year many of the children discover they need corrective eyewear and Friends of Huruma funds eye exams and prescription eyeglasses.
A growing need is mental health counseling for the children. The back stories of many of the children are violent and tragic. They carry many emotional wounds that need tending. Friends of Huruma is committed to providing funding for counseling services for the children. These stories also spill over into the lives of the staff who spend each day with the children. Eventually the staff come to share the trauma and stress that the children bring with them. Beginning in 2020, Friends of Huruma partnered with Centre Director, Pastor Joyce, to provide opportunities for the staff to receive extra support as well.

Goal Four: Collaboration with Mission Partners
Core to the work of Friends of Huruma is building relationships and developing mutual goals. These values support the strategic goal of collaborating with mission partners. You can read more about this goal on our Partners page. |
The goal of collaboration is founded in the conviction that the broader our base, the steadier and more sustainable our mission can be. By cultivating relationships with our partners in Germany, Iringa, and here in the United States, we can live into the vision of Friends of Huruma, to be a community of support around the globe, dedicated to nurturing the children of the Huruma Centre so that they can see fulfilled the promise of a good and fruitful future.
Goal Five: Capital Projects - goal for 2021: $10,000
The Capital Projects goal of Friends of Huruma is built on the third pillar of the work of Bega Kwa Bega: prayer, partnership, and projects. This goal supports the maintenance of the buildings in the Huruma Centre compound, the construction of new buildings as need for them arises, and the completion of special projects. You can read more about current and future projects on our projects page. Nearby are pictures to help you understand the scope of past projects.
